Skipping Girl Vinegar Sign, Melbourne for Water H2O ThursdayThe Skipping Girl Vinegar sign, a cherished icon and heritage landmark in the history of Melbourne, Australia, has long captured the imagination of locals and visitors alike. First illuminated in 1936 and affectionately known as "Little Audrey," the sign was originally created to advertise Skipping Girl Vinegar, a beloved household brand. Although the original sign was removed in 1968, public sentiment led to the installation of a replica in 1970, preserving its legacy as Melbourne’s first animated neon sign. On a recent evening, Joel and I chose to indulge in an exquisite dining experience at a nearby Japanese restaurant before making our way to the sign for a long-exposure photography session. Though the sign is not consistently illuminated each night, it appears to be lit more frequently during the winter months, perhaps to enhance its nostalgic glow against the early evening skies. Witnessing Little Audrey in a long exposure was nothing short of an epic experience — her timeless skipping motion captured in ethereal light, bridging the past and present of Melbourne's vibrant urban narrative.
