Granite Island, Victor Harbour, South Australia Part II for Water H2O Thursday

Granite Island proved to be a true delight to visit, even under a veil of subdued and overcast skies. Though the weather was less than radiant, it lent a quiet, moody atmosphere to the landscape—enhancing rather than diminishing the pleasure of my visit. I spent the better part of the day meandering along its winding paths, taking in the island’s rugged charm and the rhythmic sound of the waves breaking along the granite-strewn shoreline.

Situated just off the coast of Victor Harbor in South Australia, Granite Island is steeped in natural splendour and quiet historical significance. The island is connected to the mainland by a heritage causeway—once traversed by a horse-drawn tram, a rare and much-beloved attraction that still operates for visitors today. The island itself is modest in size yet rich in geological interest, its name owing to the enormous granite boulders that dominate the landscape. These ancient stones, sculpted by millennia of wind and sea, gleam with lichen and salt spray, standing as silent sentinels over the Southern Ocean.

Despite my enthusiasm for photography, I travelled without the burden of a tripod, preferring the lightness and freedom it afforded me on the trail. In its absence, I made creative use of my surroundings—steadying my camera upon fences, stones, and the very earth itself to capture the essence of the place. Though this impromptu technique comes with limitations, I welcomed the challenge. The effort of composing a still shot amid the island’s shifting light and breeze became part of the experience—an honest engagement with the environment, rather than one dictated by gear.

In all, Granite Island offered a serene retreat into South Australia’s coastal beauty—a place where the grandeur of nature, the passage of time, and the quiet joy of wandering converge.
