Kilcunda Beach, Gippsland for Water H2O ThursdayA Coastal Reverie: Kilcunda Beach at the Lowest Tide Situated along the tempestuous shores of South Gippsland, Kilcunda Beach reveals its more secretive and extraordinary character at the ebb of the tide. Though always a place of rugged splendour and serene contemplation, it is during the rarest of low tides that the coast unveils a hidden marvel. There exists a distinct segment of Kilcunda’s coastline which may only be explored at the most extreme of low tides. Ordinarily, the ocean recedes to levels between 0.3 to 0.5 metres—sufficient to disclose patches of sand, stone, and seaweed. Yet, on occasion most rare and wondrous, the tide retreats to an extraordinary 0.1 metres. At such times, I have stood upon the damp, glistening sea floor, witnessing an expanse of marine terrain laid bare to the open air—an otherworldly vista of tide pools, sea creatures, and the contoured artistry of nature beneath the waves. Overlooking this stretch of coast stands a relic of human industry and historical resonance: the Kilcunda Trestle Bridge. Constructed in the early twentieth century, this timber structure once carried the railway line that served the Wonthaggi coalfields—conveying both mineral wealth and local travellers through the heart of Gippsland. Though its rails have long since been silenced, the bridge remains a monument of elegance and endurance, arching gracefully across the Powlett River and drawing the admiration of visitors from far and wide. Kilcunda, in its union of natural majesty and historical depth, offers a scene both enchanting and humbling. To walk its shores at such a moment of profound low tide is to witness a hidden symphony of land and sea—a memory long to be cherished by those fortunate enough to behold it.
